The Gajraj Corps of the Indian Army recently carried out a collaborative flood relief operation called ‘Exercise Jal Rahat’ at Hagrama Bridge on the Manas River in Assam. The purpose of this exercise was to verify and synchronize joint exercises while ensuring the readiness of various flood relief teams from different agencies.

In addition to the Indian Army’s SSB, other participants in the event included the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and representatives from the police. The event focused on coordinating and practising rescue missions in flooded areas, with specialist teams from the Army, NDRF, and SDRF working together to save people in need.
Efforts were made to promote the implementation of creative methods by the flood relief units, where both the Army and SSB teams showcased the utilization of local materials and techniques in responding to such disasters. It is worth mentioning that the Indian Army has consistently taken the lead in flood relief operations and successfully rescued numerous individuals.
“The exercise was used to teach all the participants how to work together effectively in the event of a disaster relief mission,” Maj. Gen. S. Murugesan, the general officer commanding of the Army’s 21 Mountain Division said.
Different Aspects of Flood Relief
The flood relief exhibition showcased a stationary exhibit of multiple equipment pieces, along with practical demonstrations highlighting different aspects of flood relief. Moreover, a specialized Army unit performed a rescue operation, conducting training exercises to save people who were stranded.
According to district officials, the event served as a way to assess the capabilities, resources, and response systems of all participants while also promoting cooperation between civilian and military entities.
Amit Kumar Thakur, the DIG of the SSB’s Bongaigaon sector headquarters, Dhananjay Basumatary, an executive member of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Madhav Chetri, the secretary of the BTR, and Gaurav Upadhyay, the chief executive officer of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, were among the attendees at the event.
