ATKMB’s Dimitri Petratos scored all three of his penalties in a game that finished 2-2 in ordinary time, and in the shootout, Vishal Kaith stopped Bruno Ramires to advance the team.
When the game ended 2-2 after extra time, ATK Mohun Bagan defeated Bengaluru FC on penalties to win the 2022–23 Indian Super League (4–3). Bruno Ramires and Pablo Perez missed the vital penalties for BFC, while Dimi Petratos, Sunil Chhetri, and Roy Krishna scored goals during regulation.
After ATK and Atletico de Kolkata winning three titles together, this is the first ISL championship for the ATK Mohun Bagan team in their new incarnation. Moreover, Sanjiv Goenka declared that the team’s new name will be Mohun Bagan Super Giants.
The final for Bengaluru FC got off to a bad start as Sivasakthi Narayanan left the game with an injury and was replaced by Sunil Chhetri in the fourth minute. A few half-chances were at each end as both teams adapted to the personnel shift.
After Roy Krishna handled in the box while attempting to challenge Ashique Kuruniyan for a header, and the referee pointed to the spot, Simon Grayson’s evening took a turn for the worst. ATK Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 14th minute as Dimi Petratos converted a penalty despite Gurpreet Singh Sandhu dove in the right direction.
With BFC looking disjointed in attack and defence, Juan Ferrando’s team demonstrated their confidence by pushing Gurpreet into a few saves later. Nonetheless, they continued to pose a threat from set pieces. Javi forced a terrific save from Vishal Kaith, and Sandesh Jhingan headed over from a corner while rising highest.
The drama surrounding the championship game didn’t let up as Roy Krishna was denied a penalty when Pritam Kotal looked to make contact while trying to clear the ball in the 35th minute. Bengaluru appealed, and the referee waived them away.
Nevertheless, ten minutes later, there was no question, and he pointed to the spot in first-half injury time.
Subhasish Bose missed a clearance effort and made contact with Roy Krishna in the penalty area, giving up a penalty. When both teams headed into halftime equal, Chhetri stepped up and took just one step to guide the ball past Kaith, the ATKMB goalkeeper diving the wrong way.
At halftime, both coaches made substitutions, with Lalrinliana Hnamte and Pablo Perez replacing Glan Martins and Aleksandar Jovanovic, respectively. In the 54th minute, Ferrando made another substitution, replacing Ashique Kuruniyan with Liston Colaco. Liston made an immediate impact, forcing Gurpreet to make a save with a long-range effort in the 60th minute. But the rebound fell directly to Petratos, who missed the goal with a wide attempt.
A few minutes later, Boumous just missed with a volley as ATKMB kept up the pressure. Set pieces were the most effective form of attack as the half went on for both teams. When Roy Krishna towered above Hnamte at the far post and headed in a corner in the 78th minute, it was revealed to be the fact. Bengaluru FC’s happiness was short-lived, though, as Perez gave up a penalty minutes later after bundling Kiyan Nassiri from behind, despite replays revealing the foul started outside the penalty area.
In the 85th minute, the scores were even at 2-2 when Petratos converted his second penalty, despite Gurpreet falling in the right direction. As time ran out, Chhetri came dangerously close to scoring with an overhead kick that missed, and Prabir Das successfully cleared Petratos’ shot off the line to force extra time.
As extra time began, Javi Hernandez was replaced by Udanta Singh, who headed Chhetri’s free-kick over. In the 100th minute, Rohit Kumar came the closest with a long-range shot as both teams were battling to generate offence.
Nonetheless, both teams had excellent opportunities to go in front in the second period of extra time, as Krishna missed a shot after latching onto Perez’s flick-on from a long ball. Next, Manvir nearly scored for ATKMB when he raced onto a beautifully floated cross from Petratos at the far post but missed the net.
After Gurpreet mishandled Petratos’ long-range knuckle shot that missed the post, the game appeared headed for penalties. After that, the game went to penalties, with Alan Costa and Petratos each scoring a standout first penalty for his team.
Krishna and Colaco kept the streak of successfully converted penalties, but Bruno’s attempt was stopped by Vishal Kaith’s diving save. When Kiyan Nassiri, Chhetri, and Manvir all scored on their attempts, Pablo Perez was left under pressure to do the same. The Spaniard blazed over, indicating ATK Mohun Bagan’s victory and setting off scenes of joy.
