Popular Japanese manga “One Piece” is arriving on Netflix as a live-action series. Showcasing the coming-of-age adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate with a heart of gold, the world’s best selling manga series has already been turned into an anime TV series with over 900 episodes. One piece also has 13 animated movies, video games and merchandise galore.

The Live-action of  “One Piece,” is expected to release later this year, after the global success of “Demon Slayer,” another manga that started in Shonen Jump and was adapted into a movie as well as an anime series picked up by Netflix. The first season of One piece will be having the East Blue arc and begin with Luffy’s journey as a pirate.

The upcoming series is developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda while it is being produced by Tomorrow Studios, the same production team behind Netflix’s now-canceled Cowboy Bebop adaptation. The release date for the series has not been announced yet but rumor has it that the August 2023 release date is being considered.

Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy will be seen as the main protagonist Luffy whose nationality is canonically a mystery alongside American actor Emily Rudd as Nami and Japanese-American actor Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro.

According to Kelts, the author of Japanamerica, Anime has comparatively lower production cost than live-action films, as computer-generated heroes don’t get sick. They don’t even get injured or give offensive remarks offscreen like real-life actors sometimes do. All these factors make anime a more marketable medium.

The development of Live action can be both thrilling and daunting for viewers who have witnessed the mixed success of a growing list of Hollywood adaptations.Fans are  impressed by the visual teaser released by Netflix on January 30 in which the main members of Straw Hats Pirates can be seen looking towards The Going Merry, anchored on the horizon. However, some internet users still prefer anime.

Most of the filming of “One Piece” is taking place at Cape Town Film Studios, which has ample space for the pirate ships, and according to sources three pirate ships for the show have already been constructed so far.
