The USDA Grants Approval For First Honey Bee Vaccination
In a groundbreaking event, the Agricultural Department of the United States of America approved the world’s first vaccination for honey bees. This step has been taken to protect the honeybees from foulbrood disease. The root causes of this disease lie in the bacterium Paenibacillus larvae which is reportedly found in beehives to weaken and kill it. This required beekeepers to administer antibiotics and often burn infected colonies to prevent them from spreading and infecting the remaining. Currently, no cure for the disease has been discovered, however, a vaccination has been launched to protect against it. Initially only prevalent in Canada and the United States, the American foulbrood has slowly started to spread across the globe
