Taiwanese tabloid DigiTimes claimed today that a new Apple Watch Ultra with a larger 2.1-inch display will be released in 2024, citing sources in the industry. This information is consistent with data released last month by Jeff Pu, a tech analyst for the Hong Kong-based investment firm Haitong International Securities.
The 2024 model would feature a screen almost 10% bigger than the 1.93-inch display of the present Apple Watch Ultra and probably have the first Apple Watch with a case larger than 50mm. In addition, the new Ultra is anticipated to be the first Apple Watch to use microLED display technology. This will give it an advantage over current models with OLED displays in terms of brightness, power usage, and contrast ratio.
If there will be an Apple Watch Ultra upgrade in 2023 is unknown.
The folding and rolling of iPhone models to entirely transparent AR glasses are just a few examples of the “game-changing product developments” that, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, microLED technology may enable Apple to deliver in the future.
Due to the exorbitant expense of producing microLED displays, Apple’s adoption of the technology will probably take many years to complete.
Apple is still working to finish switching all of its products to OLED panels in the interim. The Apple Watch was the first Apple product to include an OLED display in 2015, and the OLED transition for the iPhone began in 2017. According to rumors, the first OLED-display MacBook Air and iPad Pro versions will be available in 2024.
