Russia unleashed a massive missile barrage on Ukrainian cities, targeting energy infrastructure facilities in the first attack on such a scale in three weeks Ukrainian officials stated that the residential buildings were hit but did not immediately say if there were casualties.
Air raid sirens wailed for hours across Ukraine including the capital Kyiv, where the residents were jolted out of bed by explosions it was not clear how many missiles had struck various targets in Kyiv.
Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko said these explosions were reported in the city’s Holosiivskyi district and emergency services were heading there the sounds of the missiles were being intercepted by the defence systems which were activated in multiple regions of the country.
Eastern Ukraine was also struck by 15 missiles and the outlying northeastern region hit residential buildings, according to the Kharkiv government Olah Syniehabov has promised to reveal more details about this mass-scale damage or any casualties that occurred in Ukraine’s second-largest city.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported on Telegram that there were “problems with electricity” in some parts of the city. The governor of the Southern Odessa region, Maksym Marchenko, also reported strikes in Odessa, saying that the energy facilities and residential buildings were hit by Russian missiles.
“The second wave is expected right now, so I ask the residents of the region to stay in shelters!” Marchenko wrote on Telegram a little over two hours ago. The Ukrainian railways reported power outages in certain areas five trains were delayed by more than one hour, and more than ten trains were delayed by more than thirty minutes.
Several other preventive emergency power cuts occurred in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and the Odesa region supplier DTEK said, Kutschko says 15% of the capital’s energy consumers were without power due to the emergency power cuts.
More explosions were reported in the northern city of Chernihiv and the western Lviv region, as well as in the cities of Dnipro, Lutsk and Rivne. Ukrainian media also reported explosions in the western regions of Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil.
Since last October Russia has been striking missiles at Ukrainian cities and major vital spots. The last massive barrage took place on 16th February Four people were killed in the Lviv region after a missile struck a residential area, Lviv Gov. Maksym Kozytskyi said. Three buildings were destroyed by fire after the strike and rescue workers were combing through rubble looking for more people.
A fifth person was killed and two others wounded in multiple strikes in the Dnipropetrovsk region that targeted its energy infrastructure and industrial facilities, Gov. Serhii Lysak said.
It was the sixth time the plant was in a state of blackout since it was taken over by Russia months ago, forcing it to rely on 18 diesel generators that can run the station for 10 days, Energoatom said.
Two people were wounded in the Sviatoshynskyi district, also on the west side of the city, and cars were ablaze there, the mayor added.
