Why is Manish Sisodia in jail?

Manish Sisodia, the head of the Aam Aadmi Party, is in jail in connection with suspected irregularities in the now-cancelled Delhi spirits case. Following an interrogation by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister was arrested last week. The new liquor policy brought in by the delhi government stirred controversies because it allowed the private entities to own and run liquor stores and the government liquor stores were shut. Since then there were allegations of irregularities in the new scheme.

Allegations on the jail authorities

The party alleged that the jail authorities deliberately lodged him in the jail with hardened prisoners. The main objection being that the Court decided that he should be given a “vipassana cell” a cell which can be used for the purposes of meditation, The court also allowed him to carry a Bhagwad Geeta. Yet he was not allotted a vipassana cell instead he is lodged in a ordinary cell. Which AAP claims is a violation of the courts order.

Clarifications by jail authorities on allegations by AAP

On Wednesday, the Delhi Prison authorities dismissed the allegations made by the Aam Aadmi Party as baseless, and stated that Manish Sisodia has been placed in a ward within Central Jail No.1 of Tihar where there are only a few inmates and no gang members.

The jail authorities further clarified and said “Manish Sisodia has been assigned to a segregated ward keeping his security in mind. The ward…has minimum number of inmates who are not gangsters and are maintaining good conduct inside the jail.” According to jail officials, a separate cell makes it possible for him to meditate or do such other activities without any disturbance.”

An official further added that “All the arrangements, as per jail rules, are in place to ensure his safety and security. Any aspersions cast about his lodgings is unfounded,”

Dilip Pandey, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, has alleged that court orders have been disregarded and Manish Sisodia, who is in Tihar jail, is being held with criminals who have dangerous records. Pandey claimed that Sisodia was subjected to mental torture by Central agencies before being placed in jail with these dangerous criminals. Additionally, Pandey has accused authorities of pressuring Sisodia to sign papers containing false charges against him.

He was overseeing 18 out of 33 portfolios in the Delhi government at the time of his arrest. The detention of such an influential figure has led to a fierce political battle between the AAP and the Bharatiya Janata Party, particularly since it is an election year.
