Located in the Alwar region, the uninhabited town of Bhangarh is one of the eeriest places imaginable and is unanimously considered as one of India’s most haunted places. It is considered to be so dangerous that even the Archaeological Survey of India has legally prohibited anyone from entering the Bhangarh Fort after dark.

The legend goes that during the 16th century, a tantric named Singhia fell in love with Ratnavati, the beautiful princess of Bhangarh. And knowing it was a hopeless match, decided to use his magic to seduce her.
However, the princess uncovered his plans and sentenced him to death. Before his death, enraged by the turn of events, he cursed the palace to doom and the town to be roofless and miserable forever.
Nearby locals believe that anyone who goes into the fort after dark won’t make it back, so visit at your own peril.
Legends
According to legend, a sadhu lived within the fort area, and according to his injunction, any house built in the precinct of the fort should not be taller than his own, and if the shadow of any such house fell on his house, it would result in destruction of the fort town.
When columns were added to the fort that cast a shadow on the sadhu’s house, the result was destruction of the fort and surrounding towns. According to another tale, a priest who was a practitioner of black magic fell in love with a beautiful Bhangarh princess with many suitors.
One day, the priest followed the princess to the marketplace and offered her a love potion.
However, she refused it, throwing it onto a large rock that consequently rolled onto the priest and crushed him to death. Before he died, the priest cursed the entire village, condemning it to destruction and desolation.

Popularly known for being the Most Haunted Place in India, Bhangarh was, in fact, a flourishing town of ancient times. Built for his son, Man Singh I, in the 17th century by Madho Singh, one of the nine ratnas of Emperor Akbar’s court, Bhangarh Fort was once a thing of beauty and power. It is believed that over 10,000 people used to reside in Bhangarh before it was allegedly deserted overnight! Spooky. Standing in ruins, this 400 years old grand edifice and the spread town around it owe their present state to the pitiful Bhangarh Story that sealed its ill-fate.

When you are here, you might marvel at its majestic architecture, yet many say they are burdened with a sense of anxiety, and they often feel anxious and restless. Some visitors even pointed out that they get a weird sense of paranoia as if somebody is following them around. Reason why, despite its popularity, visitors avoid hanging around the premises of the fort for long.
No visit after sunset
It is completely forbidden to venture or stay inside Bhangarh Fort at night. As a matter of fact, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has even put up boards at several spots in Bhangarh to warn people against staying in the premises after sunset and before the sun rises. As per the locals, anybody who managed to go inside the fort at night, they never returned to tell their tale, as it is believed that spirits roam there at night, which turns this place into a hotbed for paranormal activities.
