Parliamentary leader Rahul Gandhi has suspended Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir state due to bad weather and landslides, the party said today. Tomorrow is a rest day, but the march continues on Friday morning.
“Due to bad weather and landslides in the region, the afternoon run of #BharatJodoYatra in Lanvin and Banihal has been canceled. Tomorrow is a rest day and the yatra will resume the next day, January 27, at 8am,” said the senior official. Leader Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet.
Mr. Gandhi was seen wearing a jacket in the rain as the Yatra began walking under heavy security cover from Lanvin towards Kashmir. He and his supporters will have to reach Banihal tonight, mainly by car, due to track terrain, weather and safety reasons.
The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed this morning due to landslides and falling rocks in Ramban district. Officials said the highway will be removed and reopened as soon as weather conditions improve.
