Events Scheduled for the National Level Exhibition
A press release was sent out on Thursday by the National Trust, a statutory organization for the welfare of people with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, autism, and multiple disabilities. This public statement announced plans for a one-day national exhibition to recognize the abilities of Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PwIDD).
A cultural program featuring performances by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the arts, including dance, singing, and visual arts, will be one of the exhibition’s main events. Additionally, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities will have the opportunity to display the things they have created as a way to highlight their skills.
The press release states that National Trust Recognized Organizations (ROs) will set up nineteen booths. The cultural program highlights include a yoga performance by PwIDDs, a Bihu dance, and a patriotic dance by PwIDDs.
Ten ROs will also perform other routines throughout the national exhibition for Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
Keynote speakers with expertise working with PwIDDs, like Dr. Shanti Auluck, Chairperson of Muskaan Parents Association, Delhi, will be at the national exhibition. In addition, two PwIDDs who are currently employed will discuss their experiences doing so during the show.
Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Who Are They?
Disorders known as intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) are conditions that typically manifest at birth and have a detrimental impact on a person’s trajectory of physical, intellectual, and emotional development. Many of these ailments affect numerous organ systems or body parts.
Recent research on the prevalence of people with intellectual disabilities has revealed that India’s overall lifelong prevalence of ID is 2%. This statistic indicates that up to 2 crore individuals in India have an intellectual disability.
Anytime before age 18, a child can develop an intellectual disability. It is characterized by intellectual functioning and intelligence difficulties, including the capacity to learn, reason, solve problems, and other skills, and adaptive behavior, which provides for regular social interactions.
“Developmental disabilities” refers to a broad category of disabilities, many of which are lifelong and can be either intellectual, physical, or both. Instances of intellectual disability and other disabilities are referred to as “IDD” conditions. Autism, behavior disorders, brain injury, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, intellectual disability, and spina bifida are a few examples of developmental disabilities.
The Nationwide Level Exhibition: Why Is It Important?
Many countries recognize March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Therefore, a national exhibition for Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities being hosted at this time indicates the celebration of the talent and skills among PwIDDs.
This exhibition can increase public understanding of integrating people with developmental disabilities into every aspect of community life.
It can even raise awareness of the challenges still faced by those with disabilities in assimilating into their local communities.
