On March 8, Australia and India concluded the ‘Australia-India Education Qualification Recognition Mechanism’. On a visit to India, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made it public while speaking on a program regarding the announcement of setting up a branch of an Australian university in India. He declared that Australia’s Deakin University would set up a satellite campus in Gujarat’s Gift City.

In the event, which consisted of the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Governor Acharya Devvrat, Albanese stated that there is notable progress in bilateral education relations. He proceeded to reveal that both countries finalized the Australia-India Education Qualification Recognition Mechanism.

The new mechanism

The system is that if a student is studying in Australia or has earned a degree from there, it will be acknowledged in India from now on. Similarly, a student’s Indian qualification will be accepted in Australia if they belong to the Indian migrated community.

This agreement is the broadest and all-inclusive one India has ever signed. The bilateral relationship on the grounds of education allows Australia to expand its education industry by providing more advanced and obtainable education for Indian students. The visiting premier said that the mechanism will result in obvious benefits and development.

In addition, PM Albanese announced the granting of a currently developed scholarship exclusively for students from India who intend to study in Australia.

The Maitri scholarship helps 45 Indian students who want to take up undergraduate or postgraduate courses from Australian universities. This is available for students who want to study there for four years. The scholarship is associated with the Maitri program, which is created with the objective of improving the relationship between India and Australia on account of culture and education and uniting the countries better.

Australian Education Minister Jason on the scheme

The mechanism will be signed in Delhi by Australian Education Minister Jason Clare with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Clare said that the scheme is a result of decade-long planning. He explained that even though India has had agreements with economically flourishing countries like the United States, the agreement with Australia stands different. Besides the courses offered by colleges in India affiliated with Australian universities or directly by the primary university, the initiative is extended to online courses as well. Thus, irrespective of the course being remote or offline, the degree will be recognized for the future educational steps of the students.

On being asked if a person with a degree in medicine can fly to Australia and work as a practitioner without any further procedures, Clare said that it is not possible at the moment as there is a separate registration process for the medical field. After the implementation of the university recognition, efforts will be put to work on the acknowledgment of various professional courses.

At the Australia-India Education Council meeting held in 2015, the former Australian cricketer and global brand ambassador of Wollongong University, Adam Gilchrist, announced that they are planning to bring a branch of Wollongong University to the Gift City of Gujarat.
