History says it all;

The Palme d’Or, first given out in 1955, is the festival’s top honor, and in the past, Indian films have frequently taken home the awards. Numerous Indian films, ranging from Neecha Nagar (1946) to Kharij (1982), have either received or been nominated for the coveted Palme d’Or award.  There are about fifteen movies that have won in the past, and about ten movies were nominated.
