Indian Government Issued Advisory over Severe Influenza Cases
  • In the past two months, Indian states have noticed many influenza cases with a prolonged illness and chronic cough.
  • The increment in flu infections has alarmed the public after two years of fighting the COVID pandemic.

The influenza cases have dramatically grown in different Indian states in recent weeks. However, many people complain of unpleasant coughs, fevers, and body pains. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, the present belongs to the Influenza A subtype H3N2 virus, causing an increase in flu and viral fever cases nationwide.

The Official Advisory

The government official has also sent a warning In light of the unexpected rise in Influenza across the nation. However, several influenza cases have been recorded from various regions in the country, with people exhibiting symptoms and enduring prolonged sickness. People have complained about symptoms like a persistent cough, fever, bodily soreness, etc.

The World Health Organization has also kept an eye on the situation. The western countries had also an increase in cases between September and January, which coincides with an increase in flu infections and is reported as  seasonal influenza. 

According to the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Influenza is an infectious respiratory ailment that causes the flu with a Mild to severe illness, and sometimes even death might result from it.

The seasonal Flu

In India, influenza cases typically peak between June and September, during the monsoon season, and then again between November and February, during the winter. Doctors in India have reported cases of persistent cough brought on by the flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenovirus, rhinovirus, and other viruses. Other symptoms include fever, a throat infection, congestion, a blocked nose and sneezing, tiredness, and muscle and body aches.

Causes and remedies

Indian Medical Association claims that those under 15 and over 50 typically experience these occurrences. Together with fever, some people are also suffering from upper respiratory infections. Air pollution is another factor for respiratory infections. There is no need for antibiotics; hence the IMA has encouraged doctors to treat symptoms merely.

The IMA observed that people often immediately take antibiotics without regard for dosage or frequency and quit once they feel better. The over usage of antibiotics needs to cease as it contributes to antibiotic resistance. The medical society recommended avoiding crowded areas, using excellent personal and respiratory hygiene techniques, and getting the flu shot.

According to Professor Harshal R. Salve, AIIMS Institute for Community Medicine, the harsh climate conditions are to blame for the rise in flu virus transmission. Dr. Salve told a media source to identify the virus’s serotype and the extent of its endemicity. The authorities must conduct serological surveillance through procedures already in place in the public health system.

Physicians at Chanakyapuri’s Primus Hospital reported that patients with severe lung infections and asthma had trouble breathing. Children, the elderly, and expectant mothers are most susceptible to infection. The physicians advised them to use extra caution whenever they go outside.

To protect yourself from flu symptoms brought by the Influenza virus, which is imitating symptoms of Covid, the ICMR has published a list of dos and don’ts.
