The Election Commission announced that it would conduct peace meetings on Monday and Tuesday to prevent any problems with law and order in Tripura following the announcement of election results on March 2.

According to Kiran Gitte, the Chief Election Officer, there have been meetings with all significant parties about this.

“On February 27 and 28, 2023, there will be peace meetings,” the Chief Election Officer announced, adding that “people will be asked to approve a resolution to preserve peace.”

What Prompted This Development?

Earlier in the month, during the voting for the Tripura assembly elections, clashes between supporters of the governing BJP and the opposition CPI outside a polling booth led to one person reportedly suffering a leg injury.

The claimed incident allegedly occurred in front of the Kalacherra polling place in the south Tripura district’s Shantirbazaar Assembly constituency.

In preparation for the recent Tripura Assembly elections, Tripura Chief Electoral Officer Kiran Gitte held review sessions on Thursday in the South Tripura, Gomati, and Sepahijala districts.

State Chief Secretary JK Sinha, Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan, and Additional DGP Saurabh Tripathi attended the review conference.

Discussions During The Review Meetings

The review meetings heard discussions and concluded to systematically adhere to the Election Commission of India’s instructions to ensure a smooth counting process.

Another conclusion that the review meetings led to was: It is necessary to deploy the appropriate measures to keep law and order in the state during and after the counting process.

The Electoral Commission of India is anticipated to send out the Counting Observers starting February 28.

Notably, on March 2, ballots from 60 legislative districts will be counted at 21 polling places throughout the State of Tripura.
