World Sleep Day-2023: History, Significance, Theme

World Sleep Day is observed annually on different date in March, and this year  date is March 17. Observation indicate that the data range from 10 to 20 March.  Even though the date differ from year to year.

It observed on Friday before spring Vernal Equinox of each year. This year it is  being celebrated on March 17, 2023 while in 2024 it would fall on March 15, 2024. 

What is sleep? 

Sleep is state of reduced mental and physical activity, in which consciousness is  altered and sensory activity is inhibited to a certain extent. During sleep, there is a  decrease in muscle activity, and interactions with the surrounding environment are  significantly reduced. 

History of world sleep day 

World Sleep day was first observed on March 14 2008, as an initiative of the World  Sleep Society previously known as the World Association of Sleep Medicine  (WASM).It is nonprofit organization with group of health care provider and member 

of medical community. The annual event is aimed at raising awareness about the  importance of sleep and the impact that sleep disorder can have on an individual  physical, Mental, and emotional well-being among the people. 

How much sleep need according to age 

According to National Sleep Foundation your sleep should vary during lifetime and  should change according to age. It is not possible to always track sleep scheduled,  but it is important to health. 

Infant =17 hour  

Preschool=10-12 hour 

Teen=8-10 hour 

Older person=6-7 hour 

What happen if you don’t sleep and cause 

Insomnia and sleep deprivation are dangerous for your health, according to expert.  Sleep deprivation lead too many health disorder include chronic disease and early  death. Here few impact are

Significance of World sleep Society  

In today world, people lifestyle have become busy and stressful due to factor such as long working hour and increased commuting time. In recent year, importance of  getting good sleep has been emphasized to ensure consistent performance, leading to the rise in initiative like World sleep Day. 

The organization promote sleep health as importance to people. They believe that by  promoting sleep health and raising awareness about it, we can work together to  achieve a greater impact than sum of our individual effort. The society encourage everyone to spread about word sleep health on world sleep Day. 


The World sleep Society as announce the theme for this year Sleep Day as “Sleep is  Essential for Health”. The purpose of this theme to emphasize the importance of  good sleep.
